"...helps me stay connected, and accountable. It's another tool that I use to stay sober."

- Sales

"It's comfy because I don't have to look anyone in the eye, so I can just tell it like it is."

- Marketing Rep

"...I thought maybe I could just hide behind my computer. But what I noticed is that I actually started talking things out here, and everybody else in the group does too! Listening to how others handle their difficulties gives me new ways to think about handling mine. That's what I think is so great!"

- Retired

"I have found these online groups to be extremely effective. After rehab I was in a group where there were usually 12-14 people. Mostly it was about how you looked, what people were wearing, etc. In this group we are able to talk about things that are very meaningful, and you're not thinking about how someone looks, but rather what they are saying. Also for me, there are people in these groups who have been through a lot of different things and there have been no judgments made about one another. I have seen people move on in their lives but we have all shared our similarities. It has been so powerful."

- Marketing Rep

"I don't know why I waited so long to do this. It feels great!"

- Retired Engineer

"I like A.A. meetings but I always have this overwhelming desire to look good to everybody, even when I don't feel it. Here I can just be myself, talk straight about what's going on for me, and you guys tell me the truth. Also, I don't have to drive to get here so that's good!"

- Computer Tech

"This online continuing care is the best thing I have ever done for myself" "It keeps me connected.

- Outside Sales

"It's like starting from 1st grade for me. I have learned A LOT! This has been a real eye-opener."

"The online group is a "great tool for me because I can talk openly and I don't get so nervous."

- College Student

"I look forward to attending because I can talk about real stuff and everyone is very supportive of one another."

- Homemaker

"I was going to several different meetings, but found many "clicks" that were difficult to enter. While I am still committed to 12-Step and continue to actively participate, in this group I always get a good feeling and feel like I belong."

- Marketing

"I have many people I can trust, family, friends, therapist, colleagues and this online group."

- Marketing Rep

"My best support comes from other addicts and alcoholics in recovery, because they go through the same kind of things that I do. This online discussion is the greatest! I enjoy the hell out of these sessions. You just can't get enough support, and I know that these groups are really supportive."

- Retired

"I've been through treatment 3 times before this. This was hard for me because dealing with my feelings has never been easy. I got to deal with important feelings that I never had to face before. I learned how to be more assertive, and can stand up for myself which I didn't know how to do before. It's still kinda uncomfortable, but I'm doing better. These groups really made a difference for me."

- Computer Marketer

"This is a good thing. It's been a good experience for me. I like the convenience of being able to sign on from my home. I feel connected to the other group members and look forward to each group, I've been in treatment before and I am learning lots of new things. I'm glad I chose to participate in this program."

- Teacher

"I have been so grateful that I came to this program. It was a hard road but this program made me open up to my problems honestly. First I had to look at them from the outside but then I started looking at them from the inside. What a difference! I can't express enough gratitude to my counselors for their help in this journey. I never dreamed that I could think differently about my disease and myself. Thank you so much!"

Technical and Set-Up FAQ:

Set-Up Questions Technical Questions

How can I trust the internet when it comes to privacy and security?

Believe it or not, privacy and security are some of the benefits in participating with webaddictiontreatment.org. We are more secure than most other forms of Internet communication. Please refer to our section on privacy and security for a complete discussion of this issue.

  • You may participate and remain completely anonymous if you wish.
  • All voice communications are encoded and digitally secure.
  • The personal information entered into the webaddictiontreatment.org website is secured by Secured Socket Layer (SSL) encryption. The same technology other financial transaction systems use.
If other people have access to my computer, will they see that I have been on webaddictiontreatment.org?

NO, as long as you perform a few basic steps. We suggest that you sign off webaddictiontreatment.org session and your system when you're done using your computer. We also suggest that you do NOT use the automatic form complete feature in most browsers.

I was told that people can see where I have been on the internet. Is this true and what can I do to avoid this?

Yes, there are a few areas on all browsers that you need to look out for:
  • Step 1: do not save our site on your favorites.
  • Step 2: clean out your temporary internet files. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explore, go to=> Tools>Internet Options>Delete Temporary Internet files.
  • Step 3: make sure that you that you are on some other webpage if using Microsoft Internet Explore, then clear out your history files. To accomplish this, go to=> Tools>Internet Options>Clear History, then click on the OK button.
What do I need to connect my computer to the webaddictiontreatment.org program?

The first thing you will need is access to the internet. A high speed connect would be preferred but not required. If your computer is less than 4 years old, more than likely it will work. You will need a sound card and microphone jack as well. If you have any further questions call our toll free help line at 1-877-E-WAYOUT.

If I'm at work in my office, can I participate in a session during my break in complete anonymity?

NO, if you're connected to the corporate network, network administrators at your company have access to the "digital traffic" going through their systems. Most companies consider the computers and offices as their property and have the right to monitor and control their assets.

Where is the best place to participate in your group sessions?

We would suggest any place that is private with confidential internet access.

What else do I need to do?

Make sure that you remember the date and time of your session. We will send you everything you will need which consists primarily of a headset with a built in microphone. If you need further assistance, you can always contact us at: 1-877-E-WAYOUT.

When do I check in?

Check-in time is 15 minutes prior to your scheduled counseling session. This will help ensure that you have made all the necessary adjustments to your system for optimal performance. We will be sending you a headset with a built in microphone to make things more private, if you choose to use your existing built in speakers and microphone and feel that you are in a private and comfortable environment that will work just fine.

What type of line speed connection will I need to participate in the online sessions?

Our group sessions are most beneficial if you are using a high speed line for the video portion of our counseling. Other low speed dial up lines will work for the voice over internet protocol (VOIP) so you can still participate with the live communication.

What if I have call waiting?

If your phone has call waiting, we will provide you with a dialer that will temporarily disable this feature during your group session.

What if my computer doesn't have a sound card?

You can purchase a sound card for under $30 or a good sound card for about $60 including tax. To have the card installed should cost about $35 - $45. If you seek adventure, you can do it yourself in less than an hour.

Can other people see me while I'm in group session?

No.

Can I do anything else on my computer during my group session?

We highly encourage that you refrain from doing anything else on your computer during your session. We believe that our one hour session is packed with great information and we feel that you would maximize your return on your investment if you could dedicate your full attention to the group session. Other activities can cause the computer to lock-up. This will require a restart and possibly a loss of valuable group session time.

Why is the video portion of the session so choppy but I can hear my counselor just fine?

Unfortunately this is not unusual to see some choppy motion. There can be several possible reasons for this: If your internet line speed is not fast enough, your video card is not capable of providing anything better, you are taxing the capabilities of your computer, you may need to defragment your hard drive. This utility can be found in system tools. Allow 30 minutes for this process. We suggest that you restart your system.

Can I send email messages to my friends?

webaddictiontreatment email is a great way to communicate with your group friends and counselor. We do not use any local files to store information on you computer. All of our webaddictiontreatment email is secured with SSL.
